Power of Love

power of love back to the future

Generally speaking, I don’t enjoy watching or reading anything fantasy or sci-fi related. Maybe I just don’t have a great imagination for storylines like that?

I sit through one of those movies and think “That can’t happen” or “That’s not real” and it bugs me.

Confession time: I have never watched Star Wars (any of them,) Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Narnia, Avatar or many other popular fantasy or sci-fi films.

If a fantasy-related film has a comedic side, I may have watched it – Like The Princess Bride or Shrek for example, but if it resembles reality, without being “real” I just can’t watch it.

With one exception: Back to the Future.

I’m a BIG fan of Back to the Future.

On October 21, 2015, I was at the movie theatre watching the first Back to the Future.

October 21, 2015, was the date that Marty McFly goes to in the future, to find himself and prevent the “future” from happening, which was the plot of Back to the Future II.

2015 in reality didn’t look much like what the film director envisioned 2015 to look like back when the movie was made, in the 1980s.

So, there I was, sitting in the movie theatre beside Joy, surrounded by many male geeks, who brought their wives and girlfriends along for the experience. None of the ladies seemed as excited as the guys. Some of the guys were even dressed like Marty McFly, the main character in Back to the Future (played by Michael J. Fox.)

And then I realized – Maybe I look just as geeky as they do? Surely I couldn’t be as geeky as they were….but I was there, excited about the same film that had brought them out.

Joy likes to point out, when I say that I don’t like sci-fi or fantasy, that Back to the Future isn’t exactly “real”….to which I reply “It could be real, it’s just that no one has invented the Flux Capacitor yet…”

And that’s where this song comes in. This song is played during the opening scene of Back to the Future, as Marty is running late for school. “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News.

Back when VCR’s first came out, I remember watching Back to the Future on VHS tape and I’ve loved it ever since. I have the Trilogy on DVD and I watch it occasionally. It might have even been the first VHS tape we watched when we purchased our new VCR from Sears in Sarnia.

And, do you want to hear something crazy? I am writing the last line of this piece, ready to do some editing, I’m sitting in Starbucks and this song is playing right now!

I have to play it cool and resist the urge to move, tap my foot or anything like that…

Here’s the opening scene. Enjoy!
